Home Seller Tip: Don’t Leave Your Old Paint Cans Behind!

One of the most common oversights sellers make when moving out is leaving behind old paint cans. As a real estate agent who has conducted countless final walkthroughs, I can confidently tell you—buyers don’t want your half-used paint cans.

Sure, it might seem like a kind gesture to leave behind extra paint for touch-ups, but the reality is, most buyers see it as leftover clutter. Unless they specifically request it, assume they don’t want it. If they do want the paint for touch-ups, a better approach is to provide them with the paint codes so they can get fresh paint if needed. If you're like my brother, you already have this information implanted in a secured excel file.

What Should You Do Instead?

  • Dispose of Old Paint Properly: Check with your local waste management service for disposal guidelines. Many areas have hazardous waste drop-off locations that accept old paint.

  • Offer the Paint to the Buyer in Advance: If you think the buyer may want the extra paint, ask them before leaving it behind.

  • Store Paint Codes for Easy Reference: Instead of leaving cans, write down the brand, color name, and paint code for the new owner.

By taking this simple step before closing, you’ll avoid any last-minute walkthrough headaches and ensure a smoother transition for the new homeowner. A clean, clutter-free home at closing makes a great final impression!
